SEGA revealed their plans to celebrate the cool hedgehog’s 30th year anniversary at the Sonic Central 2021 Live Event. The list included enhanced port to Sonic Colors Ultimate and new Retro Engine remasters for Sonic the Hedgehog (1991), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (92), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1993), and Sonic 3 & Knuckles (1994), in the form the Sonic Origins Collection, and an event featuring a symphony orchestra. Although it was all great stuff, it was mainly a collection that looked backwards to celebrate the brand’s past high-speed platforming.

Fans were able to see the future towards the end of the program, a game titled Sonic 2022. Unfortunately, the trailer was not pre-rendered and contained very little information. The best part about the Sonic 2022 trailer is how it matches some leaks from a game called Sonic Rangers.

Was there a Sonic Rangers leakage?

The majority of information about Sonic Rangers was found in a 4chan post that was made months before the announcement of Sonic Central 2021. An anonymous player claimed that the game would be inspired from Breath of Wild and feature an open-world adventure with freedom of exploration, light puzzles, and combat encounters.

The poster stated that they were bored with the game, despite the fact you could get the seven Chaos Emeralds from “cyberspace” action scenes and even be the Dragon Ball Z-inspired Super Sonic.

SEGA seems to be controlling the areas the player can visit with a thick fog barrier. As the story progresses, the map area will expand. This reminds us of how things were in Super Mario: Bowser’s Fury earlier this year.

Here’s the tweet, immortalized in a screenshot from Twitter

Sonic Rangers seems like a big departure from the Sonic the Hedgehog series and we are cautiously optimistic about it. They’ll hopefully make it more enjoyable and less boring between now and the release.

SEGA confirms Sonic Rangers leak

SEGA sent an email press release shortly after the Sonic 2022 trailer was released. It called the game “Sonic Rangers”, inadvertently confirming online leaks.

“Announcing new console experience, Sonic Colors Ultimate and Sonic Rangers. Further details on Netflix’s Sonic Prime and mobile news.

The online press release was changed to shortly after.

SEGA informed Eurogamer that the version of their press release they had given them was an older one. This doesn’t invalidate the name or leak. However, even though Sonic Rangers was a working title it now seems like it was the title at some time. This confirms our belief in the authenticity of the leak.

We hope SEGA will soon show off a much more attractive version of Sonic Rangers.
