Enthusiasm cannot replace thoughtful thought and proper planning. Even though an idea may sound great on paper, that doesn’t necessarily mean it will work. Sometimes it can make things worse. Final Fantasy XIV shows that planning differentiates between an Elidibus or an Emet-Selch. Rain, the nightclub that hosts FFXIV in-game, is currently learning this lesson.

Balmung Server is home to the club, which is well-known for its unique flavor of role-playing events. The club organizers planned a massive beach party for July 9. They decided to promote the event by putting up billboards in the real-real world once Patch 6.18.

Advertising an in-game event in the real world could have been a winning strategy. It would have increased the visibility of the in-game nightclub and FFXIV. It was also financially sensible for the organizers.

Revarious, a club co-owner, told USA Today’s for the win that she gives away more items to the community from the [in-game shop] than the whole billboard thing. We are blessed with many outstanding people at Rain, which allows us to do giveaways and other things for the community.

They purchased billboard ads to be placed in Texas and California. Two Texas-bound billboards went up in Austin and Houston. This prompted a week that seemed to be about faulty Data Center Travel and a touching tribute by the FFXIV community to turn into a wild one.

The billboard had a link to their Discord. This is not smart at all. This invites anyone to join. Even trolls or malcontents who want to see your enterprise go. After such a flood, the Discord server was made read-only.

Revarious posted a message to Discord: “So what if they made a billboard? You don’t have to look at that, and you don’t even need to come to our party but for that reason to be a reason to go after people that aren’t even involved in the idea for it to be a reason to go after them is really sad.” I hope the posterity of you who came to troll us will ignore us and return to what you enjoy doing since we aren’t.

It was easy for many to locate the official Rain website and the location of the Free Company house that hosted the event organizers after the Discord was posted. Many people gathered outside the house to spam it with Magitek mount guns. The official Rain Website was also taken down.
