Are We Going Ever To Get A Dishonored New Game?
You can say what you like about Dishonored, but it helped Arkane Studios be on the map. Arkane Studios went from being relatively unknown to the top developer in a matter of minutes. Their first-person stealth/action game Dishonored captured the hearts and attention of gamers all over the globe. It’s hard to resist the temptation of teleporting in, stabbing your target, and then disappearing into the darkness.
Arkane moved on to create new IP and games, while the Dishonored series appears to have disappeared from the world. Microsoft acquired Arkane’s parent firm Bethesda. This resulted in Arkane’s IP being put in a kind of limbo. If a traditional multi-platform game was made exclusive, would it be worth it? This is the question we are asking: Will there ever be a Dishonored 2?
After Bethesda bought the developers in 2010, Dishonored became Arkane’s first game. Arkane wasn’t well-known before then. Their most notable games were Arx Fatalis, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, and Dark Messiah of Might & Magic. Fairness is told, Dark Messiah’s emphasis on powerful spells and physics shenanigans would help create the Arkane formula that would become a household name in the 2010s. However, until Dishonored was released, Arkane was still a relatively unknown company. Bethesda still saw potential in them and assigned them the task of developing Dishonored.
Corvo Attano is a former bodyguard for the Empress of Dunwall and has been accused of her murder. Corvo receives supernatural powers from the mysterious Outsider. He uses these powers to exact revenge on the city and those who have wronged him. Also, he tries to rescue Emily, the Empress’ daughter. To do this, you will run around the city using cool powers and being a nuisance to the occupying forces.
Arkane was keen to emphasize the abilities that players would have in-game. The developers designed the level to allow the different abilities to be used together. The double jump and blink teleport allowed players to access new areas, giving them many possibilities for creative players. However, it’s safe for me to say that I was not among those players. I am the one who causes chaos by stabbing everyone.
Speaking to the Penny Arcade Report, Raf Colantonio, the creative director, spoke out about the decision to allow players to use the tools in their own way. “Allowing players break the game a bit, and I mean finding shortcuts or doing things that surprise me… as long the area itself remains protected, that’s all that matters.” It doesn’t matter what you do inside the sandbox.
Arkane wanted to make Dishonored seem a little too strong. Colantonio spoke to Joystiq and said it was difficult for them to find the right balance in game design. “We wanted to give you powerful powers to make you a badass, but we also didn’t want to make the game too simple. It took a while to get it right, and some of the tunings are obvious. Each power has a duration and cost of mana. You can also mitigate the power by saying, “Well, it only lasts for three seconds.” “
Dishonored was notable for its unique approach to how the world would respond to different playstyles. The world would be in low chaos if players were pacifists and killed only the required people (or none at any rate, if they were good enough). If you killed everyone randomly, however, the world would descend into high chaos. This would leave plague rats running the streets and one character even betraying you at the end.
Harvey Smith and Colantonio, the co-directors and co-writers, decided to massacre everyone to be called heroes at the end. Confirmed this in an interview with Kotaku. You’re a hero if you kill everyone–you killed the maids and the older adults, and all the beggars.
He continued: “We decided this sounds psychotic. It doesn’t align with our values, doesn’t match how the world works, doesn’t match any other fiction. Imagine a novel in which a man wakes up, kills everyone in his house, walks down the street, and kills everyone on the way to work. Then, at the end of the novel, he receives a medal, is made a hero, and is anointed in some manner. It makes no sense. We wanted to allow you to express yourself in the game and have the world respond to it, at least in part.
Dishonored was released in October 2012 for PC, PS3 & Xbox 360. It would be a huge success with reviewers who loved the gameplay and stealth mechanisms. Dishonored scored a 91 on Metacritic for its ability to stealth-play through the game. However, the story wasn’t up to the same standard. Dishonored was the ninth most popular new IP in the 2010s. This is an impressive achievement.
Dishonored received several DLC. These included Dunwall City Trials (a challenge mode that allows players to test their skills) and a campaign that focuses on the primary antagonist Daud. The Knife of Danial and The Brigmore witches introduced new abilities and gadgets. The Definitive Edition, a PS4/Xbox One re-release of the game released before the sequel’s release, would include all of the above.
Dishonored 2 was released on PC, PS4 & Xbox One in November 2016. It took place 15 years after the events in the original game. Players could choose to play either Emily or Corvo as they faced a new threat against Dunwall. As in the original game, you can have serious consequences for your actions, such as killing everyone. A new twist was added to the game: NPCs can be sympathetic, guilty, and murderous. Stabbing a sympathetic or guilty NPC will cause more chaos, but doing the same with murderous NPCs will result in less chaos.
Arkane didn’t plan on making a sequel to the original game. The studio was expanding its resources by developing Prey alongside Dishonored 2 at the same time. Arkane Lyon and Arkane Austin were responsible for Dishonored 2. Arkane Austin developed prey. Arkane points out that the game was built using Void Engine. However, the engine is based upon id Tech 6.
Arkane and Bethesda would see Dishonored 2 as a significant success, earning an 88 on Metacritic. Although the story was not a highlight of the game, reviewers liked that Dishonored 2 had new mechanics and abilities that made the experience more enjoyable. Based on UK charts, Dishonored 2’s physical sales were lower than the original. It would also drop significantly in the second week of sales.
Dishonored was a somewhat short-lived series. It ended with the third installment of Dishonored, which was a standalone expansion called Dishonored Death of the Outsider. You’re going to kill The Outsider. However, instead of focusing your attention on Emily and Corvo, you will play as Billie Lurk. She is an assassin who wants to reunite her mentor, Daud. They plan to team up and fight the supernatural entity.
Death of the Outsider is Arkane letting loose, allowing the players to create anarchy in the Dishonored universe. The original Dishonored game’s morality system was absent. Instead, players get all their supernatural powers right away, which allows them to get into the action without waiting for upgrades.
Although Death of the Outsider may have appeared to be a way to make money from the Dishonored brand, the idea behind it has been in development for some time. Harvey Smith explains how the main idea was thought during the early stages of Dishonored 2.
We had many discussions about the DLC. It is now a standalone expansion. This could be someone’s first Dishonored adventure. Dishonored 2 was five years ago when I suggested that DLC allow players to enter the Void and then decide if they want the Outsider to be killed. After D2 was over, we began to think about other possibilities and ended up back at Billie Lurk. Billie Lurk is my favorite, and I was eager to find out what we could do together.
Death of the Outsider was promoted as the end of the current Dishonored era. Future games will be able to feature a new set of characters. The Lead Game Designer best expressed this sentiment during an interview with IGN. He described the meaning of Dishonored to Arkane’s development team over the course of the series’ history and what the future holds for Arkane.
“Dishonored has been a part of our lives for more than eight years. It has occupied a large portion of our lives. Some of us were married and had children. We want to try out new things but keep our core values intact and build complex, multilayered, interesting games that let you play how you like. You might focus your exploration on one or the other side. Move the sliders around. There are many other areas that I can think of in narrative design and game design that I would like to explore. It will be great fun. Arkane has a great team. […] We aren’t afraid to say that this is the framework we must work within and that it will continue for another 10 years. We’ll be Arkane as long as we are Arkane.
Dishonored Death of the Outsider received great reviews. Currently holds the highest Metacritic score at 84. Some people felt that it was too Dishonored-like, citing the lack of chaos. However, many others agreed that Arkane was once again proving its value as an FPS developer.
It’s sales where Dishonored Death of the Outsider seems to have been a disappointment. Although exact sales figures are difficult to find, it is generally believed that Death of the Outsider was a commercial failure. Dishonored 2’s sales were already down, so it is reasonable to assume that a sequel that follows the original events might have been a harder sell.
