Animal Crossing New Horizons – 5 Traditions Nintendo Should Add
Animal Crossing: New Horizons, while the largest entry in the series is certainly the most important, is lacking in content. Let’s take a look at five traditions that Nintendo must bring back to the new game in order to revive the spirit of Animal Crossing.
Animal Crossing New Horizons has been the most popular entry of the Animal Crossing series, but these 5 traditions will make this Nintendo classic even more appealing! New Horizons by Nintendo is the smash hit entry to the series that was first introduced on GameCube. Animal Crossing, which debuted in 2001, has enjoyed a huge following due to its charming and engaging world that features a wide range of characters and activities.
Fans have felt disappointed by the lack of some features from older games in the new Animal Crossing. Despite its huge success Animal Crossing was a great success. As a super-fan and an expert, I’ll detail the features I believe should be brought back to the Switch title.
1. Nintendo Items
Animal Crossing – New Horizons was the first title to feature no Nintendo merchandise. In an update on March 1, 2021, Mario-themed objects were made available to players, but it pales in comparison with the Nintendo-themed items that were previously available. Animal Crossing – New Leaf featured a fortune cookie system that contained such items.
Players could purchase cookies using points and get one of fifty Nintendo products! You could get items from The Legend of Zelda or Metroid. These items made customizing your house even more fun. These New Horizons items would give you more creative freedom than ever, with the ability to place objects outside and put more houses into one ‘town’.
2. Doctor Shrunk
Here’s a character that you might not have heard of. Doctor Shrunk, a zany axolotl, has been featured in nearly every Animal Crossing title to date. He taught emotions to your character and did short shows about them in Wild World or City Folk. This is no longer possible in New Horizons. You can learn emotional reactions from any villager on your Island.
Doctor Shrunk also brought with him a new destination – in his previous games, he was at a marquee. He even had his own club where K.K. The slider would perform! It is exciting to think of adding a night-time entertainment venue back to Animal Crossing. It is great to watch K.K. perform outside. Slider’s performance is great, but the rustic charm of Slider has worn off for many players. An indoor area would be welcome.
3. Items in the Themed Range
The Animal Crossing series’ most detailed items are from Animal Crossing – Nintendo’s mobile game based upon the franchise. Although the gameplay was slightly different, there were thousands more furniture and apparel items that were added over time. Regular updates brought new collections of realistic hairstyles and modern clothing as well as themed furniture. Each year, new Christmas, Halloween, and St Patrick’s Day products are added to the game. There are also new events that bring new rewards.
New Horizons has been collaborating with designers like PUMA. This is an awesome thing in and of itself, but these collaborations only feature designs players can scan in via QR code. Also, there are a few real-life shoes. The Sanrio items could only be purchased with Amiibo cards, which was incredibly difficult to obtain. New Horizons would love to have regular furniture sets or new clothing items. Even themed ranges could be brought over from Pocket Camp.
4. Tortimer’s Island & Mini-Games
Animal Crossing – New Horizon’s island setting was an issue for many fans. It was a pleasant and welcome way to play, but people were still unsure about how it would carry on the tradition of an island separate from the home your character lives in. Animal Crossing offers a way for players to visit an offshore island since the GameCube age. These islands brought new friends, fruits, flowers, and mini-games to the table.
The Island was hosted in New Leaf by Tortimer, an elderly former mayor of the towns where the games were held. He was dressed in board shorts and shirt tropical and taught you how to play the many island tours. He also rewarded you for your efforts in games such as bug hunting, balloon popping, and furniture finds.
The New Leaf Welcome Amiibo update also included two additional structured games, Desert Island Escape and Puzzle League. These can be unlocked by certain items. Desert Island Escape sent three villagers off to survive and escape an island. Puzzle League was an Animal Crossing version of the game. Desert Island Escape was introduced to Amiibo Festival by the Wii U. This gives me hope that it will be made available to New Horizons.
New Horizons would love to have more entertainment and activities for friends. I beg you Nintendo, give us Tortimer back
5. Brewster, the Barista
Brewster’s cafe is a familiar name to Animal Crossing fans, as well as newbies. But… where is Brewster? Dataminers have discovered evidence that Brewster will make a triumphant comeback to the series. However, this is still not a reality as of Autumn 2021. Brewster has been the owner of the cafe in your city, whether it is in the museum or its own building. It has had minigames and coffee-themed merchandise. In a redesign of the museum’s design, Brewster’s shop is rumored to be included. This theory has some leverage, as Nintendo continues to release regular updates about the game.
Brewster would give the game a more classic feel. It would provide a refuge for animals and villagers alike, as well as another place to relax. Brewster could even bring a new character (such as Flick, who would take over the Bug-Off). Nintendo has probably taken a while to get this character right. He will hopefully be featured in an update.
These forgotten traditions can be forgiven, as they have been replaced with newer characters or systems, or in different areas. Although some of these features are not compatible with New Horizons_’ island setting (sadly), Nintendo should still incorporate them into the next game. These features would bring something new and more playtime to New Horizons to further its huge success.
